Soft Matter: The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of ...

The course is an introduction to the physics of soft materials, complex fluids, and biological systems, ranging from simple colloidal suspensions to polymer, spontaneous surfactant aggregates, gels, proteins and nucleic acids. Besides providing a bottom-up presentation of the properties of complex fluids, based on their microscopic structure and interactions, the course aims to highlighting the important role played by these materials in the consumer market and for nanotechnologies, focusing in particular on those applications that require an adequate knowledge of their flow and rheological properties.

Soft Matter: The stuff that dreams are made of ...

Field of research and general bibliometric data. My research activity has mostly been devoted to the experimental study of the physics of soft matter and complex fluids, covering a rather wide range of topics. So far, I have published approx. 120 peer reviewed papers that have obtained more than 4500 citations, corresponding to a Hirsch index h=35, on the following main topics:

Dreams are images, thoughts, or feelings that occur during sleep. Visual imagery is the most common Trusted Source National Library of Medicine, Biotech Information The National Center for Biotechnology Information advances science and health by providing access to biomedical and genomic information. During the REM sleep stage, brain activity ramps up considerably compared to the non-REM stages, which helps explain the distinct types of dreaming Trusted Source National Library of Medicine, Biotech Information The National Center for Biotechnology Information advances science and health by providing access to biomedical and genomic information. View Source during these stages. Dreams during REM sleep are typically more vivid, fantastical, and/or bizarre even though they may involve elements of waking life. By contrast, non-REM dreams tend to involve more coherent content that involves thoughts or memories grounded to a specific time and place.

Virtually all experts acknowledge that dreams can involve content that ties back to waking experiences although the content may be changed or misrepresented. For example, in describing dreams, people often reference people who they recognize clearly even if their appearance is distorted in the dream Trusted Source National Library of Medicine, Biotech Information The National Center for Biotechnology Information advances science and health by providing access to biomedical and genomic information. Dreams can take on many different forms. Lucid dreams occur when a person is in a dream while being actively aware that they are dreaming. Vivid dreams involve especially realistic or clear dream content. Bad dreams are composed of bothersome or distressing content. Recurring dreams involve the same imagery repeating in multiple dreams over time.

Even within normal dreams, there are certain types of content that are especially identifiable. Among the most recognizable and common themes Trusted Source National Library of Medicine, Biotech Information The National Center for Biotechnology Information advances science and health by providing access to biomedical and genomic information. Nightmares are the exception. Because nightmares involve awakenings, they can become problematic if they occur frequently. Distressing dreams may cause a person to avoid sleep, leading to insufficient sleep. When they do sleep, the prior sleep deprivation can induce a REM sleep rebound that actually worsens nightmares. This negative cycle can cause some people with frequent nightmares to experience insomnia as a chronic sleep problem.

Though Cohen works with biological materials, he is a physicist, not a medical doctor or biologist. His broad interests lie in the properties of complex fluids and soft condensed matter. More simply put, Cohen is fascinated by things that have a little squish to them (think cornstarch, silly putty, toothpaste, paint, cells and blood).

Down alternative is a synthetic form of traditional down. But what is a down alternative fill made of? This innovative material is usually constructed with a polyester microfiber fill (not to be confused with the cheaper poly-fill) that simulates the pillowy feeling of authentic down at a fraction of the cost.

Down alternative fill is much more challenging to quantify since it can be made of several different materials. However, to reach comparable insulation levels, down alternative needs to be more densely filled, meaning that down alternative is much heavier than its natural counterpart.

There are several major theories about why we dream. One is the activation-synthesis theory, which holds that dreams are interpretations by our forebrain of essentially random activity from the spinal cord and cerebellum during sleep, especially rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

You can see how this throws a monkey wrench into a simple, physics-based view of an objective materialist world. How can there be one mathematical rule for the external objective world before a measurement is made, and another that jumps in after the measurement occurs? For a hundred years now, physicists and philosophers have been beating the crap out of each other (and themselves) trying to figure out how to interpret the wave function and its associated measurement problem. What exactly is quantum mechanics telling us about the world? What does the wave function describe? What really happens when a measurement occurs? Above all, what is matter?

Ruth's close relationship with her mother-in-law and with her new family is comparable to the biblical Ruth, who tells her mother-in-law, Naomi, that she will travel with her wherever she goes and that "your people shall be my people." Unlike the biblical story, though, no mention is ever made of Ruth Younger's parents or siblings or background. We are never told from whence this Ruth has come before joining the Younger household.

Recent experiments have shown that we dream throughout our sleep, and not just in REM sleep, but we forget most of them. Dreams that occur in deep sleep tend to be unemotional, non-vivid, concerned with simple things, and hard to remember. In short, they are boring. REM sleep is where the classic dreams occur, those with bizarre juxtapositions, physically impossible feats, disturbing, moving and puzzling experiences. If we cut short REM sleep, we lose these experiences.

There are many ideas. One is that dreams may have an evolutionary function, to test us in scenarios that are important to our survival. This might explain why people often report being chased or attacked in their dreams. Alternatively, they may act to soothe the harsh impact of emotional trauma. On the other hand, many people have attested to the power of dreams for spurring creative thought, like Paul McCartney dreaming the melody to Yesterday (on waking, he improvised lyrics so as not to forget the tune), and Dmitri Mendeleev dreaming up the structure of the periodic table of elements. There is experimental support for the idea, with studies showing that people score better on tests of creativity after naps consisting of REM sleep.

Sleep is not only subjective, but preferences for sleep surfaces are individual, Arand says. "There's quite a bit of variability between individuals in terms of what type of surface -- whether it's firm, hard, or soft -- they prefer when they're sleeping," she says. "As far as we know, there is no rhyme or reason for that."

"When you lie on the memory foam, the heat from your body softens it in appropriate points," Arand says, "so this helps to support your body along the curves and natural lines of the body." Memory foam manufacturers claim this helps relieve pain and thereby promotes more restful sleep. And, though consumers often believe that very firm mattresses are best, more "giving" mattresses like these may lead to better sleep in people with back pain, according to the National Sleep Foundation.

Really think about it. How wonderful and fun and exciting is it that you can go off and chase those dreams? And how much more concrete and valuable is love in your life, joy in the simple things, and appreciating what you have?

And we're not going to talk about things that are even more important than achieving your childhood dreams. We're not going to talk about my wife, we're not gonna talk about my kids. Because I'm good, but I'm not good enough to talk about that without tearing up. So, we're just gonna take that off the table. That's much more important.

All right, so what is today's talk about then? It's about my childhood dreams. And how I've achieved them. I've been very fortunate that way. How I believe I've been able to enable the dreams of others. And to some degree, lessons learned. I'm a professor. There should be some lessons learned. And how you can use the stuff you hear today to achieve your dreams or enable the dreams of others. And as you get older, you may find that enable the dreams of others thing is even more fun. 041b061a72
